Modern physical therapy was established in Britain towards the end of the 19th century. The first school of physical therapy was established at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. following the outbreak of World War I. In 1974, the International Federation of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapists was formed,which plays an important role in advancing manual therapy worldwide.
